Namibia's Miss Universe Contestant Faces Cyberbullying: The Fight Against Online Hate (2025)

Namibia's Miss Universe Representative Faces Cyberbullying, Legal Action Vowed

The Miss Namibia Organization is taking a stand against online hate speech targeting Johanna Swartbooi, the country's representative in the Miss Universe pageant in Thailand. The organization's CEO, Umbi Karuaihe-Upi, has confirmed that legal action will be pursued, emphasizing the protection of Johanna's civil liberties and the laws against racism and defamation.

Karuaihe-Upi expressed deep concern over the 'disgusting and unprecedented' cyberbullying and racist attacks on Swartbooi. She stated, 'The Miss Namibia Organization takes these insults very seriously. They are not only tribalist and cyberbullying but also racist and defamatory.'

Despite the negativity, Karuaihe-Upi assured the public that the majority of Namibians and international supporters stand behind Johanna. She said, 'The negative ones are in the minority.'

Swartbooi's mental strength and positive mindset are being supported by her family and the organization. Karuaihe-Upi mentioned, 'She is mentally strong, and she chose to have a great time. I'm in constant contact with her, as is her mom and family, providing her with the comfort and support she needs to compete happily.'

The issue of tribalism in Namibia has been a growing concern, particularly in online spaces. Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, addressed this issue, stating, 'There is no systemic tribalism where a certain tribe is excluded from opportunities or access to resources based on their tribe.' She warned that allowing tribalism to take root could harm the country's development, emphasizing Namibia's inclusive nature.

The government is taking action to combat cyberbullying through the 'Ethical Use of Social Media' campaign and the 'My Nationhood and National Pride' program, which aims to promote unity and pride in Namibia's diversity, countering tribalism and fostering a positive online environment.
