Apple Says NO to Netflix-Style Ads: Eddy Cue on TV+ Strategy (2025)

Apple's Eddy Cue: No to Netflix-Style Strategies, For Now

In a bold move, Apple's Services Chief Eddy Cue has put a halt to speculation about Apple TV's future, firmly stating that the company isn't planning to follow the Netflix, Disney+, or Amazon Prime Video model anytime soon. This decision has sparked curiosity and controversy, leaving many wondering about Apple's unique approach to streaming.

But here's where it gets interesting...

Cue, in an interview with Screen International, reaffirmed Apple's commitment to its current content strategy, which stands in stark contrast to its competitors. Apple TV+ remains the only major player without an ad-supported subscription option, a strategy that has become the norm in the streaming world. When pushed on this point, Cue was unequivocal: "Nothing at this time. I don't want to say no forever, but there are no plans."

He further explained that Apple's focus is on providing an ad-free experience, believing it benefits consumers to avoid interruptions. While Apple TV+ is indeed ad-free, the company does sell ads for its live sports programming, a subtle reminder that Apple isn't entirely opposed to advertising.

And this is the part most people miss...

When it comes to acquisitions, Cue was equally dismissive of the idea that Apple might buy out a major studio or content library, despite analysts' beliefs that such a move could rapidly expand Apple TV+'s content library. Cue's response was clear: "Same answer as before, but let's look at Apple's history. We don't do many major acquisitions. We generally make small acquisitions unrelated to Apple TV, so I don't see that happening because we're happy with our current approach. We're building, and we'll continue to build."

Apple's largest acquisition to date was Beats, purchased for $3 billion in 2014, a far cry from the potential multi-billion-dollar deals that could be on the table with studios like WBD or Disney.

So, Apple's strategy remains unique and somewhat controversial. Will they continue to resist the industry trend, or will they eventually cave to market pressures? Only time will tell. What are your thoughts? Do you think Apple's approach is innovative or risky? Let us know in the comments!
